Jeremiah Jae – “Money” (Brainfeeder)

Take a lesson out of Jeremiah Jae’s book and learn something real quick…while you still can.

“There’s a lot music that celebrates making money, and splurging if you have it. I’m inspired by those messages but at the same time don’t feel empowered. Money has set values, but to me there is no limit on human value. I’m rich without being rich. Even as we struggle, we grow. You are money. Invest…”

So waxes Jeremiah Jae on the subject of “Money”, the first single from his epic Brainfeeder full-length Raw Money Raps. Over a soft focus guitar loop and spaced out snaps, Jae flips from sun-bleached croon to a rapid beat-riding flow and then a chopped & screwed slur that practically oozes codeine.

These three vocal personae represent the songs three perspectives, says Jae, “1) The rich man expressing his disconnection with material life, 2) The poor man’s emotional struggle attaining and losing money, and 3) the dreamer who’s objective over everything is making money by any means necessary.”

Go buy the single via NinjaTune.

[New Track] Four Tet – “Jupiters” (Text)

Saw this on Phuturelabs today. Looks like Four Tet is getting closer and closer to finalizing some info for his next release, which will also be the 15th to come out on his Text label. According to the SoundCloud description of this track, “Jupiters”, it is half of a 12″ single, coupled with a track called “Ocaras” that was featured in Four Tet’s last DJ mix “Conference With The Birds.”

“Jupiters” is rather chill with a lengthy synth-focused intro. Go to a calm space and give this one a few listens to let the textures really sink in.

We have also been made aware via the official Four Tet site that One Little Plane, an artist also on the Text label, just released their album Into The Trees which you can listen to in its entirety here.

[New Track] Squarepusher – “Drax 2″ (Warp)

A new song has been released from Squarepusher’s upcoming album Ufabulum, which will be available this week on Warp Records. “Drax 2″ is another cacophonous soundscape like its predecessor “Dark Steering,” also from the new album. The track was released via Warp’s site and was accompanied by some live performance footage as well as an interview with Tom Jenkinson for the Creators Project, a site that focuses on artists and musicians exploring new and interesting technology for their art.

Listen above and watch below and if you wanna pick up the album next week, download it on iTunes.

[New Track] Pretty Lights – “You Get High”

Derek Vincent Smith, aka Pretty Lights, dropped a free gem today. Listen below and download while you can!

[RmxWhensdy] Eskmo – Doing And Done To (DADT)

Introducing Eskmo from the NinjaTune/Warp family.

Real Name: Brendan Angelides
Location: San Francisco, CA

The first remix we have here is Eskmo doing a version of Bear In Heaven’s “You Do You” from the 2009 album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth.

The second remix is a bit more on the hype side and it comes from Kilon Tek. This remix was a part of the “We Got More”/”Moving Glowstream” Remix EP that NinjaTune put out around this time last year. You should go download that EP on iTunes or NinjaTune cause it features other artists like Amon Tobin and Slugabed doing more remixes.

“We Got More” has a great video that goes with it that you can watch below. Animation is done by Cyriak.

Music For Meditation 1

How many uses for music are there? That’s right, you are correct. One of the most fascinating uses that I have found, though, is for meditation. Songs can act like zen stories that are commonly used to gain new perspective. Take this one for example:

One day a young Buddhist was walking and he came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him, he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young Buddhist yells over to the teacher, “Oh wise one, can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river”?
The teacher ponders for a moment looks up and down the river and yells back, “My son, you are on the other side”.

There are songs, such as this story, that lead one to become lost within its sounds and noises. They are generally ambient songs that have one, if not multiple, patterns repeating throughout the track (these can be melodic or rhythmic patterns). I first begin to recognize the patterns, then I absentmindedly relate those patterns to a visual representation like water moving in a stream or clouds crawling across a sky. Then before I know it I am pondering the great mysteries of mine and others’ lives.

A great artist for trying this out would be Aphex Twin, especially anything from his album Selected Ambient Works Volume II. Listen to “Cliffs” to see what I mean:

If you have songs that you use to meditate or cause similar experiences, please share them in the comments. I would love to know what you’re listening to.

Triage, A Trio of Mayhem-Birthing Producers

From Portland, OR comes Triage, a group of three producers with 30 years of studio and live experience between them and, fun fact, there’s a degree from Boston’s Berklee School of Music somewhere in the mix.

Debt, Liar & Seth Norman (how they identify) just released Rage their latest LP on Hollow Point Recordings and it’s a born killer. Dubstep and Drum n’ Bass ranging anywhere from 70 to 170 BPM. You can listen to samples at Beatport but what I’ve got for you here are two remixes. The first is the trio doing a ramped up version of their own track “Brawl” from the LP and the second is a moombahton-esque remix from SPL (also on Hollow Point). Take a listen (and download!) then follow Triage at the sites below. Smile.

New Single: Passion Pit – “Take A Walk”

Passion Pit frontman, Michael Angelakos, tones down the airy and distorted vocals for a less-than-exciting and run-of-the-mill electro-pop tune.

The first single, “Take A Walk,” from the band’s follow-up to 2009′s debut LP Manners is most definitely coming from a more mature Passion Pit but it lacks the catchy synth lines and strange vocal melodies that earned them their immediate success in the indie-rock genre. The track starts off with a star-gazing intro that leaps right into a 4-on-the-floor dance beat that should resonate with early PP fans. Then Angelakos’ vocals enter and it is clear that something is different. The verses actually remind me of something off of MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular. The song is pretty catchy but I feel that it loses all footing in the chorus. It will make a great Summer anthem but it just didn’t reel me in like some of their previous singles.

Look for the release of Gossamer on July 24th via Columbia and catch Passion Pit on tour this summer.

Watch: Simian Mobile Disco – “Put Your Hands Together”

Producers these days are finally coming into the limelight in their own regard. Think about it. Whenever before this year, was it the norm to include …”featuring DJ So-And-Face” in the song title. I’m glad to see that the producers making the beats and music to back all the Top 40 singers are getting recognition.

That being said James Ford, who has worked on projects such as Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys, and Peaches, has his own jams to focus on outside of his engineering work. Ford is one half of the electronic music duo, Simian Mobile Disco (the other half is Jas Shaw). They have a new record coming out on May 14 called Unpatterns via Wichita Recordings.

The video below is for a slow-evolving techno jam called “Put Your Hands Together.” Check it out and follow Simian Mobile Disco at various places.

BRAINFEEDER’s Newest Addition: Christina Ryat

Brainfeeder’s latest padawan, Christina Ryat (Ryat for short), is getting ready to release her newest LP Totem on June 4th. Her previous album, Avant Gold, was released in 2010 and since then Ryat has been touring extensively including a show at SXSW this year. I’ve been sampling some of her new tracks at NinjaTune and I’m feeling a Flying Lotus aesthetic with airy and winding vocals climbing over every chain-linked rhythm. She is truly a beat seamstress (feminists, please don’t take offense).

The first track above is “Howl” from the upcoming LP and the second is “Not For This Lifetime from Avant Gold.

You can pre-order the album here.
Visit Ryat on SoundCloud, Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks for reading and happy Friday!
